Holdings of congregations

Congregations are made up of groups of the faithful, both lay and religious, who meet periodically for specific spiritual and material purposes: prayer, charity, and the care of the sick and the needy. Many congregations were founded within the Society of Jesus or were linked to it. We list here the documentary collections produced by these congregations and currently held in our historical archive.

Congregazione Mariana della Purificazione

The Congregation of the Purification was one of those affiliated with the ‘Prima Primaria’. Its members were united by a particular devotion to the Virgin Mary and St Joseph, and by their visits to the sick in hospital.

It was based in one of the chapels of the Church of the Gesù in Rome; its members’ aims were prayer and the care of the sick. The collection comprises minutes of regular meetings, membership registers and correspondence.

The collection is currently being reorganised.

The congregation met in one of the chapels of the Church of the Gesù in Rome.

Its members’ aims were prayer, the collection of alms for the less well-off and the care of the sick.

Today, the records are held in our historical archive, include correspondence, minutes of meetings, certificates, and printed material. The collection is currently being reorganised.

Congregations in the holding of the Roman Province vol. 552

The holding of the Roman Province contains documents produced by certain congregations. These represent a remnant of their archives; in many cases, only the bylaws or a few letters sent to the Province have been preserved, rather than the entire archival collection of each congregation. They are valuable records of their work.
