Rules
Research in the Historical Archives of the Euro-Mediterranean Province is free of charge and open to qualified researchers with an interest in scientific investigation.
Restrictions on consultation
In compliance with the regulations of the Holy See, it is possible to consult documents produced up to October 1958, the end of Pius XII’s pontificate.
Documentation produced after October 1958 belongs to the “closed” period and cannot be consulted, with the exception of photographs, print material, newspaper articles, and grey literature.
Access and consultation
Our Archives are private and visits are by appointment, to be arranged by telephone or e-mail.
At the entrance, you are required to store your personal belongings (bags, backpacks, coats, etc.) in the lockers provided.
Food, drinks and sharp objects are not permitted in the study room, and the use of mobile phones is prohibited.
The use of pens is strictly forbidden.
Researchers can use personal computers, paper, pencils, tablets.
Documents can be retrieved three times a day: at 10.15 a.m., 12 noon and 2.15 p.m. Each researcher may request a maximum of two archive items per retrieval.
Two archival units may be left in storage for no more than seven consecutive days.
Reproduction
Reproduction for study purposes is permitted under the following conditions:
- You must first inform the archivist which documents you intend to photograph.
- You can photograph up to 10 pages per folder or diary per day.
- Photographs taken independently may not be published.
For the publication of reproductions:
- Each researcher may request a maximum of three reproductions per day for publishing purposes.
- You must fill in the appropriate form, indicating the reference number and editorial references, provided by the Archives.
- The archivist will provide high or medium resolution reproductions.
- In the case of publications or exhibitions (physical or virtual), it is mandatory to correctly cite the reference number, the Historical Archives and, if requested, affix the logo.
Publications
All scholars are required to notify the Archives of the publication of any articles, theses or monographs produced as a result of their research at the Archives. A copy of each publication must also be sent to the archivist, who will place it in the library.
With respect for the work of researchers and archivist, we remind you that failure to comply with the regulations may result in the termination of consultation.
